Afghanistan at the Crossroads |
| Afghanistan
is currently passing through the most crucial phase of its history.
Events since the advent of the Soviet backed communist regime in April
1978, followed by the Soviet armed intervention in December 1979 have
changed the entire course of Afghan history. The independent and nonaligned
status of Afghanistan has been eroded and the country was turned into
another satellite state of the Soviet Union. The present critical
situation in Afghanistan has been interpreted from various perspectives
but none of them presents an authentic account, especially about the
Afghan resistance movement and the role of political parties like
the Afghan Social Democratic Party (ASDP). |

|
The author who has been intimately associated
with the policy-making proces in Afghanistan and is a founding member
of the ASDP, gives an authentic account of how Afghanistan was accupied.
He provides an in depth analysis as an insider and vividly recounts how
his party and other Afghan resistance groups are engaged in the national
liberation struggle of Afghanistan.
The book is based on the author's deep knowledge of Afghan history, its
culture, its people and the foreign policy pursued by that country. A
remarkable feature of the book is the firsthand account of the author's
own role in mobilising international support for his party's liberation
struggle against the Soviet imperialism. It also discusses about the future
foreign Policy of independent Afghanistan.
It is a candid story of a great liberation movement based on authentic
account and contains useful information.
3. Afghanistan,
Nonalignment and the Super Powers
|
|
This
study discusses Afghanistan's foreign policy against the background
of Anglo-Russian rivalry in the region prior to the Second World
War and Super Power competition and confrontation in its aftermath.
Dr Wakman describes how despite its relatively small size, land
locked isolation and position, and cultural
conservatism, Afghanistan has been able to preserve its independence,
territorial integrity and sovereignty, withstand Great Power pressures,
and adhere to a course of strict neutrality. This book highlights
the factors which prompted Afghan leaders to join the Non-aligned
Movement and discusses in detail Afghanistan's role and contribution
to the movement since its inception.
The
book examines the political changes in Afghanistan during 1978 as
well as subsequent developments leading to the Soviet intervention
in December 1979.
Dr Wakman concludes that the independent and non?alignment status
of Afghanistan has been eroded after the overthrow of the Daoud
Government in April 1978 and the country's foreign
policy shows a perceptible tilt towards the Soviet bloc?a departure
from its historical stance of neutrality. This book is useful for
an understanding of current problems confronting the Indian subcontinent.
